Leh, Sep 26: Police on Friday arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, two days after violent protests over Ladakh’s statehood demand and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule left four people dead and nearly 90 injured, officials said.
Wangchuk was taken into custody around 2:30 pm by a police team led by Ladakh DGP S D Singh Jamwal. The specific charges against him were not immediately known.
The Home Ministry has held Wangchuk, a senior member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), responsible for provoking unrest. Along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), LAB has been spearheading the movement for over five years.
Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike in support of these demands, rejected the allegations, condemned the violence, and ended his fast on Wednesday after the clashes.
