Beerwah: A large group of women on Friday held a strong protest in the main market of Beerwah, Central Kashmir, against the ongoing installation of smart electricity meters in the area. The demonstrators said they are already struggling with steeply rising power bills and fear that smart meters will worsen their financial burden.
Protesters raised slogans and demanded that the Power Development Department immediately stop the installation process. They said their concerns have been ignored despite repeated appeals to authorities.
Many women said electricity bills have increased sharply in recent months, making it difficult for households to manage essential expenses. They warned that the introduction of smart meters will create additional pressure on already distressed families.
One protester said that every month the bill amount keeps rising, and people are unable to cope with the mounting costs. She added that instead of providing relief, the authorities are imposing more financial strain.
Another woman said the administration should focus on improving basic civic facilities first before implementing measures that add to public hardships. She stressed that residents are not against development, but decisions must consider the needs of low-income families in Beerwah.
