New Delhi, Jan 24: A Delhi court on Saturday permitted jailed Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid to attend the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament by granting him custody parole.
Custody parole allows an inmate to visit a specific place under armed police escort. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma, who allowed Rashid to attend the session starting January 28, subject to previously imposed conditions, including those related to travel expenses.
Rashid’s counsel, Vikhyat Oberoi, informed the court that an appeal concerning the issue of travel costs is currently pending before the Delhi High Court.
Earlier, in November last year, the court had granted Rashid custody parole to attend the Winter Session of Parliament on all sitting days. He was also allowed to attend the Monsoon Session between July 24 and August 4, 2025, under similar arrangements.
In 2024, Rashid was granted interim bail to campaign during the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
The Independent MP has been lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 2019 following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with a 2017 terror funding case.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Engineer Rashid won the Baramulla seat by defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah by a margin of over two lakh votes.
