Srinagar, Jan 30: A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir on February 1 and 2, bringing light to moderate rain and snowfall across scattered to fairly widespread areas of the Union Territory, the Meteorological Department said.
A senior MeT official in Srinagar said the higher reaches of the region are expected to receive moderate snowfall with fresh accumulation during the period.
According to the department, weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry until January 31, after which cloud cover is likely to increase by evening. Improvement in weather conditions is forecast from February 3 onwards, with partly cloudy skies expected to prevail till February 6.
In view of the forecast, authorities have issued an advisory asking travellers and transporters to remain cautious and to seek updates from traffic authorities regarding road and highway conditions before starting their journeys, especially on mountainous routes and inter-district roads.
People living in snow-bound and high-altitude areas have also been advised to avoid venturing into slippery and avalanche-prone zones during the snowfall period.
The official said following advisories is essential to minimise inconvenience and ensure public safety amid the expected change in weather conditions.
