Blast Site Near Nowgam Police Station Sealed by FSL for Investigation

Srinagar, November 16: The area around Nowgam Police Station has been sealed by Forensic Science Laboratory teams and security forces as investigations continue into the blast that killed nine people and injured 32 others, officials said on Sunday.

Forensic experts and security personnel are carrying out detailed on-site examinations to gather evidence from the spot. The accidental explosion occurred late Friday night inside the police station and caused extensive damage to the building. The injured are receiving treatment at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat said on Saturday that speculation regarding the cause of the incident was unnecessary, as early findings suggest an inadvertent blast during a mandated forensic procedure.

The nine people who lost their lives include one officer from the State Investigation Agency, three FSL personnel, two crime-scene photographers, two revenue officials assisting the magistrate, and a tailor who was part of the operation.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the government will extend all possible support to the families of the deceased and has directed Education and Health Minister Sakina Itoo to ensure the best medical care for the injured. He also assured that compensation will be provided for the damaged structures.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah called for a thorough and independent investigation, stating that possible errors in the initial handling of the explosives may have contributed to the tragedy.
