New Delhi, Aug 29: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel has been appointed as the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)* for a three-year term, according to a Personnel Ministry order issued on August 28.
Patel, who served as the 24th RBI Governor from September 2016 until his resignation in December 2018, becomes the first central bank chief since 1990 to step down before completing his tenure, citing personal reasons.
The economist has had a long association with the IMF, having earlier worked there and even served as a deputation expert to RBI in 1996–97, advising on debt markets, banking and pension reforms, and forex market development.
He has also worked as a consultant to the Finance Ministry (1998–2001) and held various roles in both the public and private sectors.
