New Delhi, Nov 18: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Union Territory’s police chief over alleged negligence at a super speciality hospital in Jammu that led to the death of a 58-year-old woman.
According to reports, the lift at the hospital abruptly shot upward at high speed as the woman stepped inside, causing her severe injuries. She remained in the ICU for five days before she died.
Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report published on November 6, the NHRC said the incident raises serious concerns about human rights violations, particularly due to the hospital’s failure to maintain essential safety infrastructure.
The commission has sought detailed reports from the chief secretary and the director general of police within two weeks.
The woman’s relatives alleged that there was no lift operator or security guard present at the time of the incident. They also claimed there were no warning signs indicating any technical fault or malfunction in the lift.
