Shopian, Jan 6: The historic Mughal Road remained closed for vehicular traffic on Tuesday following overnight snowfall in the higher reaches, officials said. Fresh winter activity has led to significant snow accumulation along the key inter-district route that connects south Kashmir with the Pir Panjal region.
Officials said around four inches of fresh snow has accumulated at several stretches of the Mughal Road, making travel unsafe. The latest snowfall has worsened already harsh winter conditions, resulting in continued disruption of traffic movement on the route.
Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been deployed, and snow clearance operations are currently underway. Heavy machinery has been pressed into service to clear the snow; however, officials said it may take some time before the road is restored and declared safe for traffic.
Authorities have advised residents and commuters to avoid travelling on the Mughal Road until clearance work is completed and an official announcement regarding reopening is issued. The road frequently faces closures during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risk, with reopening dependent on prevailing weather conditions.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and further updates will be shared once conditions improve and vehicular movement becomes possible.
