Srinagar, Jan 23: Fresh snowfall across the Kashmir Valley has led to the suspension of traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway and major disruptions to air and rail services, officials said on Friday.
Authorities said vehicular movement on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was halted in both directions after heavy snow accumulation near the Navyug Tunnel made travel unsafe. Snowfall that began late Thursday night affected large parts of the valley, severely impacting connectivity.
An official said that apart from NH-44, other key routes including the Mughal Road, Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road and Sinthan Road were also closed due to fresh snowfall.
Commuters were advised to avoid travelling on these routes until snow clearance operations are completed and the roads are declared safe. Officials urged the public to rely only on official Traffic Police updates for accurate information.
Air travel was also affected, with at least 17 flights to and from Srinagar Airport cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Officials said the cancelled flights included services linking Srinagar with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Jammu, and warned that more cancellations were possible if snowfall continued.
Passengers have been advised to remain in contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules.
Meanwhile, rail services on the Banihal–Baramulla section were suspended after several passenger trains were cancelled owing to heavy snowfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
