Supreme Court to Hear J&K Statehood Case on Oct 10, Declines Urgent Listing

New Delhi, Aug 25: The Supreme Court on Monday declined a plea for urgent hearing on the Jammu and Kashmir statehood matter, confirming that it will be taken up on October 10.

Petitioners’ counsel sought early listing, citing a contempt plea over the Centre’s promise of restoring statehood after the abrogation of Article 370. However, Chief Justice BR Gavai, heading the bench, said the matter requires a constitutional bench and cannot be heard before the scheduled date.

On August 14, the court had asked the Centre to respond within eight weeks to the petition on statehood and observed that ground realities, including the recent Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 dead, must be considered before any decision.
